4AD INSPIRED CALENDARS
Experimental Calendars |  Spring 2022
An experimental 2022 calendar, inspired by the work that Vaughn Oliver did for The Pixies at 4AD. Each month is based off a different song. Every image was created entirely by me through photoshop. I used photos I took of a burned down roller rink, my wrecked car, vacations, and a ton of different textures I've collected over the years.

January:  I Can't Forget
The spinning car wheel references the lyric "burning up the road" and a cigarette and bed hidden inside the wheel reference "I stumbled out of bed, I got ready for the struggle, I smoked a cigarette"
February:  Monkey Gone to Heaven
A monkey was added to a photo of some graffiti that said 2 and RIP, along with some metal bars posed to look like a cross.
March:  Wave of Mutilation
Distorted photos of my wrecked, or "mutilated" car
April:  Wave of Mutilation
This song is about a Japanese businessman committing suicide by driving into the ocean, so I collaged more photos of my wrecked car with a photo of water and the rust on the car.
May:  Dig for Fire
Frank Black of The Pixies says this song is just nonsense so I just based this calendar around fire. I overlayed multiple photos of the burned down roller rink near my house with a photo of my friend holding a lighter to reference the kids who burnt it down.
June:  Isla De Encanta
Frank Black says this song is "literally just about a beach" so I took some photos from a vacation to Florida and collaged them with a lot of gross elements and pollution because a common theme in their songs is environmentalism. To further this, I scattered the dates all around the image as if they were littered.
July:  Head Carrier
References the lyric "I'm going down the drain again" with an image of a drain from my college.
August:  Silver
References the lyric " I can't see this lady, it is shady" with an out of focus picture I took in my darkroom photography class using a cheap plastic camera
September:  Debaser
"Slice up your eyeballs" is referenced by the sliced up text and eyeballs hidden in the wood
October:  Debaser
"Girlie so groovy, slice up your eyeballs" is referenced by the cut up eyeballs hidden within the image and the female mannequin with no eyes
November:  Wave of Mutilation
Burnt and rusted metal from vehicles at the burnt down roller rink collaged with a photo of the "goodbye" screen from my wrecked car, taken the last time I drove it before it was sent to the junkyard.
December:  Mr.Grieves
This song is about the end of the world, a nuclear winter where Mr.Grieves is meant to represent death. To capture this I used a photo of a dark, abandoned building I photographed during winter in the upper peninsula. Mr Grieves is represented by the dark ghostly character on right of the image.
